Children’s Education Project

Supplementary Education

Our supplementary classes remain one of the most popular activities we run as Somali parents in this area seek better performance for their children.

The programme recruits Somali speaking tutors and carries out sessions to provide practical support on key areas of curriculum, including ICT, maths and science. This has been running on Saturdays and 2 hours for one weekday evening during the week. These sessions are coordinated to remedy pupil’s individual needs and areas of under achievements.

  • 45 children who attended regularly to this activity had shown 25% increase to last year’s number
  • Pupils who regularly attended our activities have performed better in their education.
  • 95% of 60 pupils who attended these activities have moved at least 1 level up in their KS1, KS2 and KS3. This represents substantial improvements in their school performances.

Home-School Liaison Project

Our School Liaison Project is primarily designed to open communication channel between Somali families with English barriers who live in and around Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, and local Schools that their children attend. The Sessional worker organised meetings between Somali Parents number of local schools and already established effective lines of Communication between these Parties, helping Somali parents understand the English education system.

•       Direct communication channels between disadvantaged Somali children and their families, and Schools around Rotherhithe and Bermondsey established and improved.

•       Throughout the project at least 35 Somali-speaking children and their families took direct advantage of project

•       We reduced isolation and poor attendance of Somali children which in turn lead better school performance and improved results.

•       We directly linked up with 20 more Somali pupils in local schools to our Home work activities and class sessions.
